OSU-OKC and OHSO to Celebrate Motorcycle Safety Month with Kickoff Party

To celebrate and raise awareness for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City’s (OSU-OKC) Center for Safety and Emergency Preparedness (CSEP) will host a Kickoff Party with the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office (OHSO) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at the Public Safety Training Center, 3501 W. Reno Ave. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

Across Oklahoma, motorcycle riders are gearing up to enjoy the warmer weather. With this, however, comes significant risk. While motorcycle fatalities have decreased more than 40 percent since 1992, according to OHSO, motorcycle operators and passengers are still losing their lives every year because of unsafe speeds, impaired driving, or lack of experience.

CSEP aims to eliminate these types of fatalities through education. Their motorcycle education program, consisting of basic, advanced, and even three-wheel courses, aims to increase confidence and skill among motorcycle operators. With nearly 50 training bikes in rotation, OSU-OKC also hosts the largest training fleet in the entire state.

“Our mission is to ensure all of our students feel comfortable and safe while operating their vehicle of choice,” said Ruthann Baugh, CSEP Director. “Since motorcycle operation presents unique and extreme risks, we wanted to emphasize the importance of this particular safety month with a fun and informative event.”

CSEP instructors, members of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and the Edmond Police Department will be leading demonstrations throughout the Kickoff Party to show proper motorcycle safety. Additionally, there will be an exciting ride simulator that will allow participants to get behind the wheel and a “bike rodeo.” The event will be community-oriented with door prizes, food trucks and local dealers showcasing bikes for sale as well as equipment.
