OSU-OKC Lectureship Expands Efforts to Address the Nursing Shortage

OKLAHOMA CITY (October 10, 2022) – OSU-OKC Nurse Science Department is pleased to announce the return of the Margaret Brock Lectureship on October 21, 2022, after a multi-year hiatus due to COVID.  The COVID pandemic and its impact on our healthcare heroes is well known.  Healthcare provider burnout, providers leaving their profession, and fewer people wanting to enter the healthcare professions have been well-covered in the media.  In response to these challenges, the program has selected Dr. Renee Thompson from the Healthy Workforce Institute as this year’s speaker.

Dr. Thompson and the Healthy Workforce Institute (https://healthyworkforceinstitute.com/) focus on strengthening organizations to create a healthy workforce, equipping leaders to address disruptive behaviors, and empowering employees as active participants in culture change.  Dr. Thompson’s presentation will begin with helping participants reconnect with their why – why did they become a nurse and continue into creating a culture of caring in the workplace.  The presentation will help reinvigorate existing nursing professionals, provide tools for how to combat stress and burnout in the profession, and will be a great primer for self-care for future nurses.

The OSU-OKC Nurse Science Program has provided high-quality instruction and well-prepared graduates for over 50 years.  We have been an active participant in growing the local nursing workforce through increasing admissions and adding a separate LPN/Paramedic-to-RN option.  As we continue to grow and evolve, the program has recognized that we must also empower students with the tools to help mitigate the challenges of being a new provider in today’s high-acuity, high-stress environment.  This multi-faceted approach to an ever-evolving healthcare system will help to ensure that OSU-OKC continues to be at the forefront of nursing education in the metro area for the next 50 years as well.
