OSU-OKC announces enrollment for first Fire Academy

OSU-OKC accepting students for first Fire Academy

Eight-week academy set to begin in March; only 25 students will be accepted

OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 29, 2019) – Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City is launching its first Fire Academy and enrollment is now open for the eight-week program.

The academy will launch March 23 and will be capped at 25 students. Classes will be held Mondays through Thursdays for the duration of the program. Upon completion, students will have earned the required firefighting certifications needed to apply for a job as a firefighter.

The academy provides an alternative to the one-year firefighting certificate program offered at Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City (OSU-OKC), said Joe Bennett, director of the school’s Fire Protection program.

“The academy is intended for students who can commit to eight weeks of full-time training,” Bennett said. “It would be a good fit for students who recently graduated from high school or even military veterans who are seeking a role in the workforce.”

He said prospective students should apply and enroll by the end of February at the latest in order to leave enough time for Fire Protection program administrators to order correctly sized bunker and training gear.

OSU-OKC President Brad Williams said the academy strengthens the university’s commitment to training the next wave of first responders in the state.

“Many fire departments and local law enforcement agencies include OSU-OKC public safety graduates, and we are proud to continue our work in building Oklahoma’s first-responder workforce,” Williams said.

Placements in the Fire Academy will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested students should first apply for admission to OSU-OKC, and then enroll for the academy with an academic advisor.
