Celebrate Constitution Day and National Voter Registration Day at OSU-OKC
OSU-OKC will celebrate National Voter Registration Day and Constitution and Citizenship Day on September 19, 2023. Events will be held in the Hub on the second floor of the Student Center from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Games, prizes, voter registration, food, and breakout sessions are among the activities planned.
Multiple speakers are planned for the day.
Oklahoma City Councilman from Ward 2, James Cooper, will speak on the Importance of Civic Engagement. Cooper began his first term on the Oklahoma City Council in April 2019, and teaches English and Film Studies as the Artist in Residence at Oklahoma City University, where he serves on OCU’s Arts & Sciences Advisory Board.
Tamra Banks Johnson, Assistant Professor of History at OSU-OKC, will speak on Historical Limitations on Voting. Johnston’s primary academic focuses include studying the intersectionality of American popular and political cultures, emphasizing the social movements of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, and examining how African-American women were portrayed historically in popular culture and mainstream media.
Lathonya Shivers is the Public Service Coordinator at OSU-OKC, and will speak on Public Service. Before serving as Assistant Professor and the Public Service Program Coordinator, she served as the Director of TRIO programs at Oklahoma City Community College, where she was an adjunct professor of Political Science.
Dr. Dorothy Weaver will speak on The Civil Society. Dr. Weaver is currently the lead instructor for sociology, anthropology and geography at OSU-OKC. Her specialty areas are the intersection of gender and religion, post-Soviet transitions, and social problems.
