Assessment  for Continuous Improvement

Institutional assessment at OSU‑Oklahoma City is a coordinated, campus‑wide process used to evaluate student readiness, student learning, and institutional effectiveness. Through entry‑level placement measures, general education and program learning outcomes assessment, and student engagement feedback, the institution gathers evidence to support continuous improvement in teaching, learning, and student success.

The sections below outline the primary components of OSU‑OKC’s Institutional Assessment framework and how assessment results are used to inform planning, decision‑making, and accreditation.

Institutional Assessment Plan & Handbooks

The Institutional Assessment Plan outlines OSU‑Oklahoma City’s approach to evaluating student readiness, student learning, and institutional effectiveness. The plan establishes expectations for assessment activities across the institution and describes how results are used to support continuous improvement, planning, and accreditation.

OSU-OKC Institutional Assessment Plan 2025-2030

The OSU‑Oklahoma City Institutional Assessment Handbook establishes the institution’s framework for assessing student learning and educational effectiveness in support of continuous improvement and accreditation. It defines institutional expectations, roles, assessment methods, and reporting processes to ensure systematic, evidence‑based evaluation of academic, co‑curricular, and support services.

OSU-OKC Assessment Handbook

The Administrative/Support Service Unit Assessment Handbook outlines OSU‑OKC’s systematic process for planning, measuring, and improving the effectiveness of administrative and student support services. It provides guidance on defining unit missions and outcomes, selecting appropriate measures, analyzing results, and using assessment findings for continuous improvement and institutional effectiveness.

Entry‑Level Assessment

Entry‑level assessment at OSU‑OKC is used to determine students’ readiness for college‑level coursework in English, reading, and mathematics prior to enrollment. Placement decisions are based on multiple measures and are designed to ensure students begin in courses that support both academic success and timely progression.

General Education & Program Assessment

OSU‑OKC assesses student learning through general education outcomes and program‑specific learning outcomes. Faculty identify where outcomes are taught and measured within the curriculum and select assignments or experiences that demonstrate student mastery. Results are reviewed annually and used to inform curricular improvement and program review.

To support more efficient tracking and reporting of learning outcomes, OSU‑OKC utilizes Nuventive, integrated with Canvas Outcomes, to collect and manage assessment data for both general education and program‑level student learning outcomes. This integrated approach simplifies outcome mapping, evidence collection, and reporting while providing consistent, centralized documentation to support continuous improvement and accreditation. Historical reporting documents are still available on the Institutional Assessment SharePoint site.

General Education

The general education curriculum is designed to help students develop math, science and communication skills and gain a sense of social, and ethical and cultural values. OSU-Oklahoma City has developed seven General Education Outcomes that address knowledge and skills all students are expected to have at the completion of an OSU-Oklahoma City degree.

  1. Oral Communication: Students will be able to articulate ideas verbally.
  2. Written Communication: Students will be able to compose ideas in writing.
  3. Quantitative Literacy: Students will be able to interpret quantitative information.
  4. Problem Solving: Students will be able to identify potential solutions to problems.
  5. Information Literacy: Students will be able to evaluate information from a variety of sources.
  6. Technological Proficiency: Students will be able to apply appropriate technology.
  7. Sociocultural Awareness: Students will be able to analyze sociocultural contexts.
Student accomplishment of the General Education Assessment Learning Outcomes is achieved through the general education curriculum. Each outcome is supported by a faculty-developed rubric designed to ensure consistent and effective evaluation of student learning. General education courses are assigned outcomes that are clearly aligned with existing course assignments, ensuring that the introduction, development, and assessment of each skill are logical and intentional. Through this intentional alignment, faculty implement appropriate assessment methods within general education courses to evaluate student achievement of the General Education Assessment Learning Outcomes.

Access to annual historical Campus Wide Learning Outcome Assessment reports can be found on the Institutional Reports & Surveys page.

Student Engagement & Satisfaction

In addition to learning outcomes assessment, OSU‑OKC evaluates student engagement and satisfaction to better understand the student experience and the effectiveness of instructional and support services. These measures provide important contextual information that complements direct evidence of student learning and supports continuous improvement across the institution.

Student engagement and satisfaction at OSU‑OKC are assessed through multiple sources, including:

  • Course Evaluations, which gather student feedback on instruction, course design, and learning environments
  • Graduation Surveys, which capture graduating students' perceptions of their academic program and overall experience
  • Alumni Surveys, which collect feedback from graduates on post‑graduation outcomes, preparation for employment or further education, and long‑term perceptions of their OSU‑OKC experience
  • Student Engagement and Satisfaction Surveys (e.g., SSI, PSOL), which examine students' levels of engagement, support utilization, and satisfaction with campus services
  • Targeted Institutional Surveys, administered as needed to support program review, planning, and decision‑making

Results from these measures are analyzed by the Office of Institutional Research and Analytics and shared with faculty, staff, and leadership to inform instructional improvement, student support initiatives, and institutional planning.

Access to annual survey reports can be found on the Institutional Reports & Surveys page.
