Micro-credentials

FAME students can earn short-term credentials called micro-credentials on their way to earning their Engineering Technologies A.A.S. degree. The criteria for the FAME micro-credentials are as follows:

 

FAME MCE-1 – Safety Culture

Program Description:

MCE-1 introduces the foundational principles of Safety Culture for FAME (Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) students, focusing on creating a safe work environment through respect for people and continuous improvement. Students will engage with key safety concepts, apply hands-on safety management practices both in the classroom and at their workplace, and develop a deep, internal value for safety.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Explain essential safety culture concepts, including respect for people and continuous improvement.
  2. Develop and articulate a personal safety commitment and effectively lead and participate in safety discussions.
  3. Conduct thorough risk assessments on various machines, identifying potential hazards and recommending improvements.
  4. Establish and actively participate in Safety Management Boards, maintaining their active status at specified intervals and contributing to the continuous monitoring and improvement of safety practices.
  5. Compose reflective essays on safety culture, incorporating feedback to refine to demonstrate a commitment to personal and collective safety improvements.

FAME MCE-2 - Visual Workplace Organization/5S

Program Description:

MCE-2 introduces FAME (Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) students to the 5S method, a key tool in Lean Manufacturing that enhances safety, quality, and productivity by organizing workspaces to make abnormalities visible. Students will apply 5S principles to improve workflow, reduce waste, and support problem-solving, all while fostering creativity and practical skills in maintaining an efficient, clutter-free workplace.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Apply the five phases of 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) to organize and optimize their work environment.
  2. Identify abnormalities and inefficiencies by using visual management techniques to make issues immediately visible.
  3. Demonstrate collaboration by planning and implementing a 5S project with their team in both classroom and workplace settings.
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of their 5S projects by documenting before-and-after conditions and reflecting on improvements in safety, efficiency, and workflow.
  5. Present the outcomes of their 5S initiatives through an End-of-Semester presentation, using visual aids and documentation to showcase their work.

FAME MCE-3 – Lean Manufacturing

Program Description:

MCE-3 introduces students to the principles of Lean Manufacturing, focusing on quality, cost reduction, and lead-time improvement through continuous improvement and respect for people. Rooted in the Toyota Production System (TPS), FAME (Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) students will explore Lean concepts in the context of technology and technical work, gaining insight into how Lean integrates with other MCE courses to drive operational success.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Explain the fundamental principles of Lean Manufacturing and their application to technical work.
  2. Apply Lean tools (such as Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping, and 5S) to identify and eliminate waste in a technical process.
  3. Analyze the difference between the “Ideal Condition” and “Current Condition” in a process to identify improvement opportunities.
  4. Demonstrate collaboration in implementing a Lean process improvement project within a team setting.
  5. Present the results of a Lean process improvement project to stakeholders, showcasing the impact on quality, cost reduction, and efficiency.

FAME MCE-4 – Problem Solving

Program Description:

MCE-4 equips FAME (Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) students with advanced problem-solving skills, focusing on the use of pocket cards and the Problem Solving Illustration. Students will master the steps and foundation practices of problem-solving, apply these skills to real-world scenarios, and present their work to leadership panels. Students will develop strong proficiency in analyzing and resolving workplace challenges through exercises and presentations.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Recite the Problem Solving Pocket Card from memory by Week 4.
  2. Apply the Problem Solving Process to identify and address real-world issues in technical or workplace settings.
  3. Analyze failure modes and root causes using the Problem Solving Illustration.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency by conducting and presenting a work-based problem-solving exercise to a leadership panel.
  5. Document problem-solving activities and outcomes, compiling them into a report or presentation for evaluation.

FAME MCE-5 – Machine Reliability

Program Description: 
MCE-5 introduces FAME (Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) students to the principles of machine reliability, focusing on corrective, preventive, and proactive maintenance. Students will use the Machine Reliability Pocket Card to diagnose and address system failures, perform RCMNET exercises, and analyze failure modes and root causes. Through hands-on projects, students will document their findings and present their results in employer and end-of-semester presentations, gaining practical experience in maintaining and improving machine reliability.

 

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Recite the Machine Reliability Pocket Card from memory and demonstrate understanding with examples by Week 8.
  2. Explain the differences between corrective, preventive, and proactive maintenance strategies.
  3. Analyze failure modes and root causes for a system and develop appropriate countermeasures.
  4. Apply machine reliability principles through RCMNET exercises in both classroom and workplace settings.
  5. Present the results of a machine reliability project to a leadership panel, showcasing improvements and outcomes.
