How to Apply

Admission to the Cardiovascular Sonography program is based on a points system. One class is admitted to the program every academic year. Review the student admissions profile to understand how these points are calculated.

Up to 20 students are admitted each year with the applicant pool varying from 60 to 100 applications. The accepted number is commensurate to the number of clinical rotations that we have available to offer the students.

Before applying to the program

Ensure that you meet the minimum requirements for admission to the program. Students must have the following:

• 2.5 Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of all previous collegiate academic work

• Pre-Admission TEAS test score

• Completion of required prerequisite courses

• Pre-clinical vaccination/shot records (Due upon admission to the program)

Application Checklist

Applicants are responsible to ensure their application packet is complete. The Diagnostic Medical Imaging Department will not process incomplete application packets or notify applicants of missing items. Applicants must ensure each item on the application checklist is fulfilled and included in the submitted packet.

Step 1: Apply to OSU-OKC

Interested applicants of the Cardiovascular Sonography program must first apply and be admitted to OSU-OKC. When applying to OSU-OKC, declare the Cardiovascular Sonography program as your major.

When applicants are transferring courses from other institutions, it is strongly suggested to apply to Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City approximately 4-6 weeks prior to submitting a program application packet.

Step 2: Submit official transcripts to OSU-OKC

Send copies of official, sealed and/or unopened electronic transcripts of all college courses to the Cardiovascular Sonography department along with your application packet to the admissions office. Student copies are not considered official. This process should be completed a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks prior to applying to the program.

A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 (C) on academic work completed is necessary to be considered for the cardiovascular program.

Step 3: Ensure all pre-requisite and support coursework is complete

At OSU-Oklahoma City, you will earn an associate in applied science degree with a major in Cardiovascular Sonography. The general and related courses required for this degree will assist in providing you with the knowledge and skills you need to care for your patients and will assure that you meet the requirements of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education for earning a college degree. General education courses such as English Composition, History and American Government will usually transfer if they are three credit hour courses. Science courses must be a minimum of four credit hours. It is strongly recommended to call our Admissions Department to ensure course transferability and/or our advisement department to undergo advisement for any remaining required prerequisite coursework. Please call the listed departments before calling our Cardiovascular Sonography office. Check course equivalency

It is required that the following prerequisites and support related coursework be completed prior to submitting a program application:

• College Algebra, Mathematical Functions and Their Uses, or higher math course

• General college level physics

• English Comp I

• English Comp II * or Introduction to Technical Report Writing

• Human Anatomy and Physiology

• Biological and Medical Terminology

• American Government

• US History to 1865 or since 1865

*The communication skills prerequisite may be met by a variety of courses including English and Technical Writing. This wording refers to our English Composition I and II prerequisite requirements.

It is strongly recommended to apply to the program after you have completed all the above required (CAAHEP) prerequisite and support course(s) with a grade of ‘C’ or higher.

Step 4: Complete the Cardiovascular Sonography application form

In addition to the general online application, applicants should complete and submit the program application to the department. Return the completed form to the appropriate address designated on the form.

Step 5: Submit a complete application packet to the department

Complete application packets should be submitted directly to the Diagnostic Image department at: okc.healthsciences@okstate.edu. All application packet contents must be submitted at one time. Incomplete packets will not be processed.

• Background Check

  Submission of aNational Group One - 7 Year background check to include Sex Offender Registry and Violent Offender Registry - through the OSU-OKC Clinical Hub.

  Submit a current (< 3 months) National Background check (click on “Background Check” link in menu to the left)

  The department will download the results.

• TEAS ATI Examination Score Result Sheet

  All applicants interesting in Diagnostic Imaging degree programs must take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) test. The TEAS ATI test must be taken with in the same year the student is applying to the program.

  The TEAS ATI exam requires a testing fee that students must pay in the Business office. Students must then bring the receipt of payment to the Assessment Center and schedule a testing appointment. After the appointment has been made, if the student will not be able to make the appointment, the student must call the Assessment Center and reschedule the exam (405-945-8648). An exam may be rescheduled only once. Student must call before the scheduled test time to cancel to receive a refund.

  An Applicant is allowed two attempts in a rolling 12-month period, but no less than 90 days after the first attempt. There is no cut-score for the TEAS ATI exam. A new TEAS ATI test is required for each year an applicant applies to the program. A TEAS ATI score of 70 or above is strongly recommended to earn a competitive number of points. NOTE: TEAS testing must be done in-person only. Online and/or remote testing results will not be accepted. All results must be emailed from the testing center or ATI TEAS directly to OSU-OKC at the following email address: okc.healthsciences@okstate.edu . Scores submitted by students will not be accepted.

• Official transcripts

  Email copies of official transcripts of all college courses to the Cardiovascular Sonography Department along with your application packet.

• Supplemental Achievements and/or Skills Narrative Letter

  If there are any applicants with an equal amount of points, a Supplemental Achievements and/or Skills Narrative Letter will be evaluated for selection into the program class. Therefore, it is suggested that Supplemental Achievements/Skills Letter include information such as previous collegiate degrees, medical experience, and community involvement/volunteer work.

Step 6: Complete a Panel Interview

The final step in the program admission process will be a short panel interview of the top scoring applicants. The panel will consist of various representatives of the organization who will evaluate the candidate using an evaluation rubric. Each panel interviewer will fill out an evaluation sheet and rate the candidate on key requirements for the program. After all interviews are conducted, panelists rank the candidates, and once a consensus is reached, the final applicants are chosen. The remaining applicants will be considered alternates. When a student is placed on the alternate list, there is no “ranking”.

Non-Admitted Students

If you are not accepted the first time you apply and wish to re apply, submit a new program application, a current National Background check, and update any official college transcripts of courses not taken on the OSU-OKC campus. If your GPA is less than 2.5, make an appointment with the OSU-OKC advisement, okc.advisement@okstate.edu for academic counseling.

Below are some suggestions for improvement:

• Completeyour general education and support related coursework with a grade C or higher.
• Take courses at OSU-Oklahoma City for bonus points.
• Take/retake science courses (be careful about scheduling multiple science courses at the same time as this can overwhelm you).
• Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater to qualify for program application eligibility.
• Improve your cumulative GPA, by taking supplemental coursework, to earn more points on your GPA.
