Course Modalities
OSU-OKC offers courses in six instructional modalities. In every modality that includes online or virtual instruction, students can expect regular, scheduled interaction with their instructor — including direct instruction, timely feedback on coursework, responses to questions about course content, and facilitation of course discussion. This reflects OSU-OKC's compliance with U.S. Department of Education requirements for regular and substantive interaction between students and instructors in distance education courses (34 CFR § 600.2).
Traditional
Course instruction is delivered 100% in person. All instruction occurs face-to-face at the scheduled times and locations listed in the course schedule. Students are required to attend in person on campus or at a designated site.
Your class schedule will show Traditional as the instructional method, as shown below.

Flexible On-Campus/Online
Course instruction is delivered simultaneously virtual in a synchronous format and on campus in person. Students have the option to attend virtually or in person at scheduled times and locations. Instructors lead scheduled synchronous sessions and maintain regular, predictable interaction with students attending in either format. Students are NOT required to attend in person on campus or at a designated site, but have the option to attend in either modality. An online course fee applies to these types of classes.
Your class schedule will show Flexible On-Campus/Online as the instructional method, as shown below.

Hybrid
Course instruction is delivered through a combination of face-to-face AND online methods. The format and schedule for in-person and online components are defined in the course schedule. Instructors maintain regular, scheduled interaction with students across both in-person and online components of the course. Face-to-face components require in-person attendance on campus or at a designated site at the scheduled times. An online course fee applies to these types of classes.
Your class schedule will show Hybrid as the instructional method, as shown below.

Online with Meeting Times
Course instruction is delivered 100% online but includes synchronous components. Students are required to attend live virtual sessions at designated times via remote platforms (e.g., Zoom) at the scheduled times listed in the course schedule. Instructors lead direct instruction during scheduled synchronous sessions and provide additional regular interaction with students. Students are NOT required to attend in person on campus or at a designated site. An online course fee applies to these types of classes.
Your class schedule will show Computer based/Online as the instructional method, but will show scheduled meeting days and times, as shown below.

Online
Course instruction is delivered 100% online in an asynchronous format. Students complete coursework through the University’s learning management system, without scheduled class meetings. Although there are no scheduled meeting times, instructors maintain regular, predictable interaction with students. Students are NOT required to attend in person on campus or at a designated site. An online course fee applies to these types of classes.
Your class schedule will show Computer based/Online as the instructional method, but no meeting days and times, as shown below.
Independent Study
Course instruction is arranged individually between the student and instructor through a written learning agreement established at the start of the term. The agreement defines the coursework, assignments, projects, research, or other approved learning activities the student will complete, along with a schedule of regular interaction between the student and instructor. Independent study courses do not follow a standard class meeting pattern; instead, the instructor establishes scheduled, predictable interaction with the student through in-person meetings, virtual meetings, or structured engagement in Canvas, appropriate to the course content and credit value. Instructors provide direct instruction, feedback on student work, and ongoing engagement throughout the term consistent with U.S. Department of Education requirements for regular and substantive interaction in distance education (34 CFR § 600.2).
Your class schedule will show Independent Study as the instructional method, as shown below.
